My Thoughts
I believe that Apathy exists in one form or another in all of us. It is an emotion which we have come to rely upon in the modern world.Imagine if we all got on with each other. A world where everybody cared about each other. there would be no wars, no murders, no violence...Does this mean that the world will be a better place? In one word no.We all need to be apathetical. If we cared about everything we would essentially be an emotional wreck. In a real sense I believe apathy is almost part of evolution. We develop this emotion to be able to shrug off things which would hold us back from making what I choose to term 'Realistic' decisions. However this can be interpreted as being decisions which would most benefit oneself personally and maybe the immediate family. Survival of the fittest?
You are now most probably be thinking that I am blowing this issue out of proportion? Surely being a little bit apathetical is OK, it is only a little bit of indifference such as that found in your typical teenager.I do not think so. We are capable of a very large number of emotions including empathy (almost the opposite of apathy) and empathy is considered to be a major psychological topic. We are now very trusting of the Wikipedia website. So check out their articles on Empathy and Apathy, big difference between how much 'we' know or feel about the two. I still have to come across a descent account be it in a book/internet reference etc (I did do a lot of research, especially at the University where I study) of Apathy but there is plenty of accounts of Empathy out there. Even accounts of caring too much. We want to be seen as being able to feel others' emotions and feelings. But most of us will do nothing to change any situation which include suffering etc, especially if it involves money.Which means that we shut out certain things. This equals apathy. It is almost as if we play up the good things we do or might do, especially if it involves a reward - be it any sort of recognition or money or otherwise - and ignore or show a lack of emotion towards everything else.We do not care about not caring. How does that make you feel about yourself?
Selective Apathy is the term I came up with to describe what I perceive to be a different state:
Where Apathy cares.
A contradiction of terms certainly. But if you do need to be apathetical in the modern world, why not restrict it i.e. be Selective. Employ your Apathy only when it is needed. I mean use the emotion (for example) to shrug off unimportant things, hurtful things or things you have no control over. At the same time start looking at situations where you can make a difference (in a good sense), and do something about it!!
So I get myself a new motto, something I try to keep in mind:
Selective Apathy, the shit don't faze me...
This was only a quick bit on selective apathy. More to come (hopefully) on Selective Apathy etc. as soon as I get my notes in order.
