I do not usually read Science Fiction books, let alone ones with as much humour as The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. But I do remember reading The Hitchhiker's Quartet in high school, kindly lent to me by Euan Hiddleston as I remember. As part of my drive to read the best 100 novels this one was a must. Sadly it is a very short book and was finished with very quickly. However I'd like to think I gained some more insight in Adam's wit from this reading than the first. Some of the humour came across more easily. This may be due partly to the fact that I fell in love with comedy a few years ago. Comedy on TV, stand up comedy nights at the Union, comedy in life. It's a great way to enjoy life and a great stress reliever.
As usual I move away from the book. I do not really have a lot to say about this one. It is an enjoyable read but it lacks impact. The humour and wit is welcome and the style of writing flows easily. This is one of the major factors influencing my thoughts of the book. I was not really able to pay any attention to what I was reading. I could not grasp the finer points of the writing. This does not mean it is a poor book. In fact this is exactly what makes the book so enjoyable. It is comedy at it's best. We do not always get the in depth jokes and when we do get them it is never as enjoyable. We always seem to get the crude jokes better and in my experience everybody loves them. The Hitchhiker's Guide is like a crude joke in this respect and as such very well written to be able to convey this analogy.
Maybe I should read some Pratchett...
Next time round Pride and Prejudice. I am being a bit slow on this one so might be a while in coming.
