The Hobbit - J.R.R Tolkien- My thoughts/Review

The Hobbit...nearly ten years after first reading The Lord of the Rings I finally get round to this classic.
And classics are what I have been trying to pursue and since they are labelled as such, a huge number of people have enjoyed these books over the years and as such they will have their own opinions and views which may differ wildly from mine. Maybe I should really be reviewing the large number of fantasy books I usually read (I am reading the early Eddings series for the 12th time to lull me to sleep at the moment) such as Feist, Hobb and also recent books from Canavan etc.
Bajekman, at work, dismissed The Hobbit as a children's book. Sure it may have been aimed at children in particular and this can be perceived readily from the start of the book but it is an enjoyable read. As with any good tale, The Hobbit manages to grip the reader, but in this case right from the start. I seem to have tried to read this book from the perspective of an eight or ten year old (when I should have probably read this) as the inclusion of Wizards and dwarfs from the very start is appealing. But I don't think that's it, although originally aimed at children, this is a book anybody can read. Even the songs seemed appropriate (I usually hate these in books) as they lifted the mood of the reader- sometimes these were quite funny. This book is great at playing with the reader's emotions - happy and laughing one minute to deadly serious danger the next to quite exciting and always leading the reader to question - what happened next and to keep flicking the pages. In other words perfect storytelling.
And that's it, short review really, I cannot give any more praise to this book. I am struggling through the start of The Lord of the Rings at the moment ( I forgot it was quite a tedious start) and sadly I don't seem to have much time to even read these days or maybe it's because I know this story too well...Maybe I should try another classic or other.
I do keep meaning to read Good night Mr Tom again. It was on t.v at christmas and though I didn't watch it I've forgotton most of the story...
